As of 12/10/21, the Salsipuedes Sanitary District along with the County of Santa Cruz Environmental Health Department and the City of Watsonville, have identified the source of the foul odor. The odor naturally occurred and was triggered by early rain in October that accumulated in the drained College lakebed. This caused bacterial activity and released the foul smell. The higher than normal temperatures of November caused the water to be stagnant and acclerated the bacterial activity resulting in more foul odors. Strategic sampling and lab analysis were conducted to confirm this conclusion. We appreciate all the residents that have alerted the District office and the County of Santa Cruz Environmental Health will continue to monitor the situation.
